Learn a New Word Today

How many words are in the English language? I have read sources that claim anywhere from 400,000 to over a million if you count scientific and technical terms. That’s why I’m always on the lookout for new words.

Today I found an interesting one: chiaroscuro. It means “an effect of contrasted light and shadow created by light falling unevenly or from a particular direction on something” (just don’t ask me to pronounce it, although a pronunciation is given), and I found it on the Dictionary ; Scoop website. This site has a Word of the Day in game form. The words are normally pretty common, but the last step in the game is to guess a related word in five tries with only the first letter given. In today’s case, the related word was contrast, which I just happened to solve by chance alone.

So if you’re interested in expanding your vocabulary, visit the Dictionary ; Scoop website for their Word of the Day (https://www.dictionaryscoop.com/).
