What Can You Believe on the Internet?

I’m not one to publically get into the culture wars, but recently I heard another reminder that what one finds on the Internet cannot be accepted without critical thought.

For example, what happened to the dinosaurs?  Type that into a Google search and and one of the top websites (and I’ve been told at one time it was the top website) is “Answers in Genesis” which explains how  “The Bible gives us a framework for explaining dinosaurs in terms of thousands of years of history, including the mystery of when they lived and what happened to them.”  In other words, the top result is a religious/creationist explanation.  Some very clever people have figured out how to game Google so their website appears at/near the top of any search on this question.

As one might expect, since this result became common knowledge, other, more scientific websites have responded with rebuttals.  Such are the ways of freedom of speech… and religion. I see it as another cautionary tale about the dangers of accepting information at face value.
